Born in Atlanta, Georgia in 1926, Jack Stewart's art first came to public attention when he was eleven years old. As a teenager he worked in the style of American Regionalism. He studied at Yale University (BFA) with Joseph Albers and Willem de Kooning, architectural studies at Colombia University, and New York University (M.A. and Ph.D.).
Stewart was also active as a writer, teacher and artist advocate, holding faculty posts at various universities, including Rhode Island School of Design, where he was Vice President and Provost. He was President of New York Artists Equity Association (1987-1989), and the National Society of Mural Painters (1996 - 2000), where he was President Emeritus in 2004.
An expert in mural painting, Stewart was one of the first scholars to recognize aerosol graffiti as an art form. He methodically documented graffiti's movement from the street to the subways of New York in the early 1970s. That and his subsequent research into graffiti were published as Graffiti Kings: New York Transit Art of the 1970s
The Ogden Museum's Jack Stewart Collection includes work from his early years in Atlanta, his abstract gesture paintings, early experiments in photo-transfer techniques, as well as his later, singular form of Magic Realism addressing environmental themes.
