Ogden After Hours - Alvin "Youngblood" Hart
May 17, 2012 |
Southern Music
|
|
6:00 pm - 8:00 pm Lobby Atrium of The Ogden Museum of Southern Art's Stephen Goldring Hall
The cosmic American love child of Howlin Wolf and Link Wray! Known as a "musician's musician," Alvin Youngblood Hart's praises have been sung by everyone from Bob Dylan to Brit guitar gods Eric Clapton & Mick Taylor.
A devout follower of the "no barriers" approach carved out by veteran performers like Gatemouth Brown and the late/great Doug Sahm, Hart aims to delight the masses and points to challenge the so-called blues purists. ,br>
In 2010 Hart joined forces with friends Luther Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars, Black Crowes) and Jimbo Mathus (Squirrel Nut Zippers, Tri-State Coalition) to form "The South Memphis String Band". The fun-loving and regaling trio was quickly dubbed by the media as an "acoustic super group". Recorded in a borrowed radio station studio while the band was on its first road trip, their debut record HOME SWEET HOME was received with rabid enthusiasm. The 2011 Blues Music Awards (The Blues Foundation) nominated the record for "Best Acoustic Album". The group plans to release a second album in the spring of 2012.
When not touring solo or plugged in with his revered rock trio "Muscle Theory", Hart enjoys researching, collecting, repairing and modifying obscure musical equipment.
Ogden After Hours featuring Hart will showcase his talents of writing in a rare acoustic show.

Unveiling of Thornton Dial's "Struggling Tiger in Hard Times"
May 17, 2012 |
Special Event
|
|
5:30 pm - 6:00 pm 4th Floor
Join us for this special unveiling of Thornton Dial's "Struggling Tiger in Hard Times" (1991). Calynne and Lou Hill have generously donated this important piece by Dial to the Ogden Museum.
A self-taught artist born in Alabama, Dial has been called an artist of "uncommon power and perception." This multi-media piece consists of oil, rope carpet, tin, carpet, and industrial sealing compound on canvas mounted on wood. Its central symbol is the tiger, which Dial uses to represent the African-American male, as he encounters life.
“Struggling Tiger in Hard Times is a significant work from Dial’s "Tiger" series, representing not only Dial’s personal struggle in life, but the larger black struggle in the context of American history,” says Curator Bradley Sumrall. “As Amiri Baraka says in his essay Proud Stepping Tiger: History as Struggle in the Work of Thornton Dial, ‘More generally, the tiger represents the whole African Diaspora, and, even more generally, it is any being who is struggling.’”
"We are celebrating the most significant gift of a single work of art to the self-taught collection since the founding of the museum," says Director William Andrews. "We are thrilled that Calynne and Lou Hill have decided to share their passion by placing this painting with the Ogden."
"Hard Truths: The Art of Thornton Dial," lauded by the New York Times and Time Magazine, is an exhibition organized by the Indianapolis Museum of Art currently on view at the New Orleans Museum of Art through May 20, 2012.
Admissison is free to museum members; $10 general admission--which also gets into Ogden After Hours featuring Alvin "Youngblood" Hart.
