About Raine Bedsole:
Born in Mobile, Alabama, Bedsole is a graduate of Auburn University and the San Francisco Art Institute. Active in the New Orleans art scene since the early 1990s, she paints and sculpts at her Marigny studio. Her work has been exhibited and collected throughout North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East. Bedsole was honored in 2008 and 2009 with grants for public art from the Joan Mitchell Foundation and Jefferson Parish (Louisiana). In addition, she was a prize-winner in the 2001 Florence Biennale, as well as honored at NATO’s Vernissage in Brussels.
Bedsole is represented by Callan Contemporary in New Orleans, La., Cumberland Gallery in Nashville, Tenn., and Wade Wilson’s Gallery in Houston, Texas.

The Ogden Museum of Southern Art/University of New Orleans is connecting artists and enthusiasts through an online benefit auction to promote the art of collecting.
"The auction is a centuries old format for public exposition and engagement which we are combining with twenty-first century technology to unite a broad audience with our museum’s mission,” says Ogden Museum Director William Andrews. “This brings us the opportunity to showcase emerging and established artists who are connected by geography or subject matter to the American South, and a great opportunity to support the museum mission.”
The featured artist for January 2013 is Anastasia Pelias.
About Anastasia Pelias:
My paintings have always evoked places, moments and consciousness. In my current body of work, Washed (to the sea and other waters), the titles pay personal homage to many bodies of water that I am connected to, including the Mississippi River in my native New Orleans and the Aegean Sea in my ancestral home, Greece. The paintings are rooted in the American tradition of Color Field Painting. I build each painting with multiple layers of oil paint and turpentine washes that saturate the canvases, creating rich textural surfaces with vibrant jewel-toned hues. I paint repetitively, in a way not dissimilar to the execution of domestic chores. The final fetishized surfaces are luminous and translucent and show evidence of the hand of the artist. I am interested in how one color sits next to another color, about what happens when one color meets another, sometimes bumping into each other, sometimes quietly co-existing.
The paintings are human sized, which facilitates easy interaction between the viewer and the painting.
I am perpetually interested in the experiential moment (the interaction between the observer and the observed). The specificity of my color choices and the varying degrees of depth created by the veils of paint complete the painting to engage with the architectural space a round them in a palpable way.
These paintings are about emotion and being. I am convinced of the power of painting - I hope to offer space for reflection and to make work that is full of visual pleasure.
